Class One Grade 7 Presentation

Media Literacy People Bingo

Use the Class Two PowerPoint Presentation to quickly discuss classroom rules and routines and than have the students try to login using their student number and last year's last password. Discuss the importance of not forgetting passwords and how to remember your password all year. Finally, show students how to save their work in their HOME DRIVE and give them time to practise this skill. Also, introduce the idea of an Online Media Locker in the form of a Blog.

Class Two Presentation

Here is an example of a Media Locker Blog. Students who successfully create and maintain a Media Locker Blog are more likely to get an A or A+.
•This year I am challenging all grade 7 and 8 students to create their own VIRTUAL MEDIA LOCKER ONLINE.
•Your online media locker should have the following:
ALL YOUR MEDIA LITERACY PROJECTS OVER THE YEAR
REFLECTIONS (JOURNAL ENTRIES) ABOUT THE TOPICS COVERED OVER THE YEAR
LINKS TO RELEVENT WEBSITES ABOUT THE TOPICS COVERED OVER THE YEAR.
While I use blogger.com to create my blog, you may use any free online websites or blogs.Let’s have a look at an example….

Term One: Review of Media Triangle and 5 Key Concepts

A Review of the 5 Key Concepts and the Media Triangle

Two frameworks are used to help you understand media messages.

The first is the 5 Key Concepts of Media Literacy.

5 Key Concepts of Media Literacy Poster

The second is the Media Studies Triangle which examines 3 different points of view (the Media Text, the Audience, and the Production) in order to gain more meaning. All 3 points of view must be considered to fully understand the media text's meaning.

Use the activity sheet Media Studies Triangle to analyse various media text....

Let's analyse a few media texts together.....

A) Here is a LegoMagazine:

B) Here is a PSA (Public Service Announcement) About Factory Farming Called "The Meatrix":

C) Here are Movie Posters.....

D) Now, with a partner or on your own, try using the "Media Studies Triangle" to analyse a Magazine....

Here is an easier way to do it......
Embed YouTube Into PowerPoint

AFTER ALL THAT..... IF U ARE STILL CONFUSED, FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE STEPS:

1. Choose a "professional" media text to analyse (song, movie, video, tv show, etc.)

2. Use the Media Triangle or the 5 Core Concepts and answer the questions

3. Create your presentation using PowerPoint, a Blog, MovieMaker, PhotoShop or MS Word

4. Embed Your Video from YouTube (I can help you with that) into PowerPoint or Blog

5. Present to Class

Term Two: Introduction to Truth in the Media

IS SEEING STILL BELIEVING?

Introduce this unit on Photo Manipulation by showing the students the following video clips:

“Spaghetti Harvest”

“House Hippo”

"Dove-Evolution Commercial"

Funny Photoshopped Images:

PhotoShopping Images

City digitally adds black guy to Fun Guide cover to make it more ‘inclusive’. A spokesman for the department that publishes the guide listing recreation activities confirmed the publication was doctored to insert the face of a different father.

Attack of the Photoshopped Missiles

Bloggers noticed something fishy about the picture Iran released of its mega missile launch. Some portions of the picture looked to be retreads from earlier images. Plus, the pic showed four missiles — which turned out to be one too many. The photo was eventually retracted for being “apparently digitally altered” .

Finally, here are "Photoshopped Images" and The Hoax Photo Archive website.

Now let's have some fun! With a partner (or on your own) try the Hoax Test!

Term Two: Using PhotoShop to Doctor Photos

Lessons on how to use PhotoShop to doctor photos:

Lesson One: Some Tips From the Hoax Photo Archive Website

Techniques of Photo Fakery

There are six basic techniques of faking a photo:

1: Inserting details. This includes placing an element from one photo into another to create a composite image, reproducing a detail of the photo by cloning it, superimposing an image onto another, or drawing-in details.

2: Deleting details. This is usually done by extending background elements over the unwanted detail. Or one can crop out the unwanted detail.

3: Manipulating elements within the photo. For instance, adjusting the color, resizing details, or rotating or moving details.

4: falsifying the caption.

5: Staging the scene. This is considered fakery particularly in photojournalism. Varieties of staging a scene include using models and cutouts and inserting a prop into the scene.

6: Taking a photo at a trick angle. The most common example of this is the use of forced perspective.

Lesson Two: Using Some of the Tools in PhotoShop

Lesson Three: The Power of Layers and Adding More Images

Choose Lesson 7 from the Tutorials Listed

5. Adding more images to your picture

6. Adding TEXT to your Picture

Also YouTube and TeacherTube have video tutorials as well.

Adobe instructional website is also useful.

Term Two: Create A Doctored Photo Using PhotoShop

CREATE A DOCTORED (BUT BELIEVABLE) PHOTO!

The Project is a Doctored Photo Communicating a False But Believable Message.
Students will use Photo Shop to doctor a photo to create a false but believable message. If time permits have students write a news story to include with the image.
Before you begin working on your photo do some planning. Each student must type one paragraph (4-5 sentences) describing in some detail what you plan to do using photoshop. What will your photo look like? What techniques will you use to create the photo? Be specific.
"The photo I am going to create will be....."

Term Three: PSA's and NGO's

Introduction to NGO's and PSA's
Research one NGO and create an animated PSA using Photoshop Elements

First, let's take a look at some of the animation projects completed in the past using PhotoShop Elements....

Also, let's take a look at some of last year's Grade 7 PSA's about NGO's!

Term Three: Animation Skills Including Internet Pics

Review Basic Animation Skills and teach Adding Pics from the internet

This term you are going to learn to use PhotoShop Elements to create an animation.

We will start with reviewing basic skills, like drawing an object and getting it to move.

6. Mode: RGB Colour
7. Contents: Transparent
8. Now draw a simple object like a Ball or Arrow (only one colour)
9. Select the object using the Magic Wand Tool
10. Go to Edit and Copy
11. Go to Edit and Paste
12. Select the Move Tool and move the object slightly in the second layer
13. Repeat the Edit and Paste to get another layer and move slightly
14. To Animate: Select File and Save for Web, Animate and Loop and select the Internet Explorer button.

Next, we will review how to draw a background, animate an object and merge that animation into the background.

ANIMATION PROJECT:
A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT (PSA) ABOUT
A NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION (NGO)

This term you will use PhotoShop Elements to create an animation PSA of an NGO.
